Natural Sciences encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines, allowing students to study a variety of sciences before specialising towards the end of the degree.
Below you will find information about the specific degree course offered at Cambridge, how to prepare, and how Oxbridge Interviews can help you with your Natural Sciences application.BOOK COURSE
The Natural Sciences degree course at Cambridge offers a wide range of subjects across sixteen departments.
The 4-year course is highly competitive with only 20% of applicants successful. To be offered a place, you generally need to get A*A*A at A Level (or equivalent), and you must have studied at least two science A-levels, including mathematics.
Oxford University do not offer Natural Sciences as their science courses are split by discipline, e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences.
To prepare for your Natural Sciences application, you must demonstrate your motivation for the subject and specific interests. You can do this by reading beyond your school curriculum. Our interviewers recommend:
- ‘I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life’ by Ed Young
- Getting on Twitter and following Science Communicators as they often share great links and suggestions!
Practice interviews for Natural Sciences applications are critical. You wouldn’t sit an exam without doing a mock, so don’t place yourself in an interview without having experienced a practice interview first.
Izzy (Natural Sciences, Cambridge)
Izzy studied Natural Sciences at Homerton College, Cambridge. She completed a PHD at Oxford University in Plant Microbiology and now works as a forestry policy advisor in the Civil Service.
Izzy, why did you choose Natural Sciences?
"I'd always been told 'you're good at sciences, you should do medicine'. I realised when I was 16 that I didn't actually want to be a medic - and that my interest in science went far beyond just human biology. I did all three sciences and maths at A level, and wanted to have the chance to study more than just one of them at university. Natural Sciences was perfect for this."
All applicants to Natural Sciences at Cambridge are required to sit the Natural Sciences Admissions Assessment (NSAA) pre-interview test.Learn more about the Natural Sciences Admissions Assessment (NSAA)
